About PhillySka.com

Who We Are

PhillySka.com is a collaborative effort of musicians, promoters, and members of the community who all share a common passion for ska. We love the music and want to see it flourish in Philadelphia. That is why we work hard to support the scene and to keep the shows coming. We help spread the word about all of the ska shows within the city, but on top of that we also book a ska showcase on approximately a monthly basis.

What Is Ska?

Ska is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s and was a precursor to rocksteady and reggae. It combines elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and R&B. Many variations of the ska sound have surfaced over the years, but what always holds true is that it is fun, danceable music that is very accessible. There is nothing quite like a live ska show.

The Site

At the forefront of the Philadelphia ska scene stands this site. It is a simple, yet highly effective tool for spreading information, which is critical for fostering a strong community. Reliable show listings, information about local bands, and a message board where you can communicate with other members of the scene (among many other features) are all now at your disposal.
